print

There is a lot of discussion about how the internet is having an impact on the print world - there's no doubt that the speed with which news items can be broadcast on the web is unsurpassable in print. However, there's still something immensely satisfying about producing printed items - they have a tactile experience that the web cannot match.

And typography on the web still has a long way to go - higher display resolutions (allowing better use of fonts) are still a long way off, and long-established print techniques such as formatting text into columns are only just beginning to appear on the web.

Annual Review - University of Reading

Brief: To design four covers for the University's Annual Review, Accounts, Proceedings and Publications, and also the 32-page Annual Review.

Solution: I was chosen to work on this project with another student, Clare Bowers - the biggest project either of us had undertaken. The theme for the covers was 'exploration', from which we developed the idea of four tools which man has used to explore his environment, and also the idea of pathways.

Annual Review contentsThe project was also an exercise in management, both in dealing with the clients, copy and with the printers. A number of images, but it was left to us to find appropriate imagery for the covers and additional images for the Annual Review. One of the challenges we faced was ensuring the final output from the printers matched our files. A number of films had to be reproduced when we noticed errors in the proofs involving text and scans.

I was very pleased with the end results - a suite of four professional documents.

YuGiOh Trading CardsScout forms long serviceScout forms - Good ServiceScout Forms

Brief: To redesign three existing Word-based form.

Solution: An exercise in long-term project control - there was a period of around 12 months between initial brief and final printed documents. The initial designs which I produced were approved by the clients, and eventually shown to a Committee, who made changes. I made some alterations in response, and the process started over again. This occurred a number of times, before there was a big reshuffle in the staff at the Awards centre (where the clients were from). After hearing nothing for three months, the order finally came through for the forms to be printed.

It was an interesting project, having not done much in the way of form design before. I learned a good deal about microtypography, as well as designing objects where the end user is critical.

Eprocurement exhibition standExhibition stands

Brief: Design exhibition stands and promotional literature for @UK eprocurement exhibitions.

Solution: Working with the marketing director, I was responsible for producing exhibition stands, leaflets, flyers, stickers, Flash demonstrations, and adverts for various eprocurement related exhibitions. A key part of this was to retain the @UK branding across all of the items produced.
