Web

Website design today requires a number of skills, from initial designs, through to implementation and build, whilst also paying attention to usability, accessibility, and search engine optimisation - all of which are required to make a website successful. Creating a website for a client usually involves a good deal of education whilst managing their expectations.

Elm Furniture Contracts

Elm Furniture

Brief: To design an online presence for Elm Furniture to match their existing logo and printed catalogues.

Solution: An @UK PLC template was created which allowed Elm Furniture to use the @UK content management system to edit and amend their site content. Elm Furniture provided a number of flat designs for their website, however these were deemed to be of poor quality, so a new design was started from scratch.

A highlight of the project was working with Elm Furniture to help them sort their catalogues in a meaningful way. This was done in two ways:

  • Using common part numbers for items (previously Elm had used several different part numbers for identical items
  • Sorting the catalogue in a user friendly way, rather than by manufacturer (previously this was how printed catalogues were presented)

Yugioh Trading Cards

YuGiOh Trading Cards

Brief: To design an online presence for Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Cards to sell trading cards online.

Solution: An @UK PLC template was created for YTC which allowed them to edit their content. Drop-down menus were used to provide navigation for the large amount of products on the site

Abergavenny Tourist Guide

Abergavenny Tourist Guide

Brief: This was a student project with an open-ended brief.

Solution: This site is a hobby site for me. One of my first websites, it has been upgraded over the years and regularly gets new content added (and somewhat less regularly the design is updated/refreshed).

A highlight of this website is the webcam which provides an updated image looking across Abergavenny every 15 minutes.

The site further benefits from a basic CMS for the hotels in Abergavenny section. The accommodation section contains maps with markers for the hotel locations, along with detailed information and images for a number of accommodation entries. The technology consists of a MySQL database, PHP pages, Ajax calls to PHP servlets producing JSON data, plus a PHP admin section for ease of updating the hotel/guesthouse/B&B data.

Additional features of the site include

Cottage Holiday Brittany

Cottage Holiday Brittany

Brief: To provide a website for holiday accommodation in Brittany.

Solution: The website provides details of the accommodation for a farm-house and associated buildings situated in France.

Getting online is a new venture for the accommodation owner, so providing this website has been (and still is) an educational process!
